The truth is out there for USC fans, if they can handle it

The truth is out there for USC fans, if they can handle it

By T.J. Simers latimes.com

I e-mailed USC sports information director Tim Tessalone to find out what time Monday I might talk to punter Mitch Mustain.

He replied: "QBs available on Tuesdays after practice as always."

My response: "I had no idea Mustain is a QB -- does Pete know?"

What better time to drop by USC than on "Tell the Truth Monday," as Pete & the Boys like to call it, to find out what they've got against Mustain.

The last time I asked the question was during Carroll's "Tell 'em anything to go away Tuesday" media session before the season opener, Carroll becoming very testy and dismissing the question.

And until Saturday evening, I was a Trojans fan.

"You're like a cockroach," Tessalone said, and in this case -- dead meat was the obvious attraction.

The Trojans threw away almost any national championship chatter with an inexplicable loss to Washington, many USC fans now calling for a quarterback they've never seen play.

I stopped by USC on Monday to find out if Mustain has ever been told why the coaching staff treats him like someone from UCLA.

But even though Mustain isn't doing much of anything these days, Tessalone said Mustain would not be allowed to talk. Then he went to the kid and told him he better clam up.

What if he talked? Were they going to bench him?

Right now no one seems to know why the kid -- who is 61-2 going back to junior high school, according to the USC media guide -- has a better chance of punting than throwing.

Maybe Mustain has been tweeting nasty things about Carroll. Maybe he should have gone 9-0 as a freshman starter at Arkansas instead of 8-0. Maybe Carroll's obvious coaching crush on Matt Barkley allows him to see no one else.

"I really do like the guy," gushed Carroll when Barkley's name was mentioned. "But I'm not sure I'd call it 'crush' because I really don't know what that means."

Whatever, The Times' daily sports poll asked the question after the loss to Washington: Now who should USC start at quarterback?

Aaron Corp had 15% of the vote, Barkley 40%, and Mustain pulled 45%.

Everyone, of course, loves the guy who isn't playing when things go sour, but why isn't Mustain getting any consideration?

"He's our third-string quarterback," said Carroll in stating the obvious, Barkley taking the bulk of first-team snaps Monday and Corp all the others.

"And that's it," Carroll said.

When Corp struggled against Washington, Barkley began warming up. Mustain was catching his passes.

"I asked both of them to warm up," Carroll said. "I asked Matt how he felt, and he wasn't loose. When he couldn't get his arm going we stuck with Aaron."

Did you ask Mitch how he was doing?

"I already knew," Carroll said, and at 100%, it wasn't good enough to get him into the game. Makes you wonder if Corp got hurt, if they'd send in Barkley -- sling and all.

"I'm watching practice every day," said Carroll, a nice way of saying he's seen enough of Mustain and it isn't enough to warrant a promotion.

Someone has to be No. 3 on the depth chart, and unless the yahoos on the message boards are saying Carroll has no clue when it comes to identifying talent, just what are they saying?

The job here belongs to Barkley, Corp right there with Mustain if Barkley is healthy.

"I got Matt warming up [in Washington] because maybe he could have had the chance to save the day," Carroll said, and like I said, he's really sold on the kid.

The Trojans had no success throwing the ball against Washington. Some folks have pointed to the play calling, others to Corp's inexperience.

"If I were you, I'd go home," Tessalone said, and I'm sure he was just joking. Or maybe they're just not used to losing around here, although it seems to happen every year about this time.

You can look it up. In "Always Compete," a new book by Steve Bisheff, he quotes Carroll as saying after losing the third game last season to Oregon State, "it has to start with me."

Sound familiar? Carroll said the same thing the other day, and so when he talks about his running backs having to learn to hold on to the ball or get benched, what about a coach who apparently hasn't learned from his own mistake -- repeated over and over?

This keeps up, and he becomes Norv Turner.

Carroll, of course, is the best college coach in the game save his Achilles' heel. OK, so second-best in town this year so far. If he had beaten the Pac-10 doormats that have upset his teams over the years, no one would rank anywhere near him. He'd be near perfect.

"That's the best quarterback we've played in nine years here," Carroll said when told Washington has beaten only Idaho and USC the last two years. "Jake Locker has ridiculous talent, and had he remained healthy last year, Tyrone [Willingham] would still be coaching there."

Leave it to Carroll to find a way where he could have won last Saturday's game.

But instead, they were losers, the inexplicable losses in the past costing them a chance to play for the national title. This year will almost certainly be different.

A year ago he had Mark Sanchez at quarterback, thereby allowing the Trojans a chance to rebound. This time around he's going to have to develop Barkley, a project he relishes, but one fraught with up-and-down results.

Carroll is going to have to coach these games like an NFL head coach, and that's scary given his record up there.

He's going to have to run the ball, hold on to it, play field position, rely on defense, keep it close and win in the fourth quarter against the likes of Cal, Oregon State, Notre Dame, Arizona State and Oregon. It comes down to the quarterback, always does.

And maybe the kid wins three or four out of five, good enough for any team, but USC.

Sorry, it's "Tell the Truth Monday," as you know.

Liquid Football Blog Tournament Weekend 3 - Match Report + Highlights!

Liquid Football Blog Tournament Weekend 3 - Match Report + Highlights!

101 Great Goals 0-1 Arseblog

Scorers:
Ronaldo 31' (ARS)

Man of the Match:
Fabregas (ARS)

A solitary Ronaldo goal and some resolute defending from bottom club Arseblog saw them pull off a shock 1-0 victory over league leaders 101 Great Goals. The Gunners started off the better side, and their pressure paid off after just 15 minutes. Totti robbed Toure of the ball on the right flank, and after turning him inside out, delivered a well-timed pass for Ronaldo, who kept his cool to slot home. 101 Great Goals wasted great chances when Riquelme and Ronaldinho shot wide in quick succession. Rooney spurned a great chance late on after hitting the post, but Arseblog's back 3 held out for an excellent victory.

SquadGod Academical 5-0 Liquid FC

Scorers:
Berbatov 21' 37' 45'+ (SGA)
Ronaldo 74' (SGA)
Ibrahimovic 81' (SGA)

Man of the Match:
Berbatov (SGA)

Dimitar Berbatov scored the first hat-trick of the tournament in SquadGod Academical's 5-0 annihilation of Liquid FC. He grabbed his 1st after a scramble in the box and got his 2nd when he headed in Gerrard's corner. The hat-trick was completed in first half injury time when he stretched to turn in Ibrahimovic's headed shot. After half-time, SGA continued their dominance, and when Ronaldo ran from his own half before beating 3 defenders and driving the ball home, there was no way back for LFC. The rout was completed on 81 minutes, when Ibrahimovic weaved his way through a static defence before sliding it under the unlucky Buffon (may we never speak of this result ever again).

Who Ate All The Pies 2-1 Touchline Sniffers

Scorers:
Kaka' 32' (TS)
Villa 55' (WAATP)
Fabregas 84' (WAATP)

Man of the Match:
Fabregas (WAATP)

A late goal from Fabregas gave Who Ate All The Pies their first win of the season, as they beat Touchline Sniffers 2-1 in a relentless encounter. TS had the better of the first half, going ahead on 32 minutes when Kaka' steered home after Reina parried Torres's shot. However in the second half WAATP came out all guns blazing, and grabbed the equaliser when Villa brilliantly turned in Ronaldo's driven cross. There was pressure from both sides before Fabregas toe-poked home with just 5 minutes left.

Caught Offside 0-2 Eyefootball Eyecatchers

Scorers:
Alves (OG) 45'+ (EE)
Van Persie (P) 68' (EE)

Man of the Match:
Buffon (CO)

An excellent all round performance from Eyefootball Eyecatchers gave them a deserved 2-0 win against Caught Offside. CO never really got a look in, as EE's defence restricted them to shots from outside the box. Eyefootball's dominance in midfield and up front paid off on the stroke of half time. Steven Gerrard's header was saved by Buffon, but the ball parried off the unfortunate Alves and in for an own goal. The Eyecatchers completed their win in the second half when Van Persie dispatched a penalty after being scythed down in the box.

Footballocks's Eleven 1-0 Fantasy Football Guru

Scorers:
Ibrahimovic 65' (FBE)

Man of the Match:
Ibrahimovic (FBE)

It was a war of attrition in this tight and often scrappy affair. The game failed to flow, and shots on goal came only from scrambles in the box or from long distance. This was true of the only goal of the game, when Fantasy Football Guru failed to clear a Ronaldo corner, and Zlatan Ibrahimovic was on hand to drill home for Footballocks's Eleven. Cristiano Ronaldo of FFG had a superb dipping shot saved by Buffon as they went in search of an equaliser, but it was not to be.

Confirmed callups for Macedonia, Poland friendlies

Confirmed callups for Macedonia, Poland friendlies
There's a thread going on the Voyageurs board listing confirmed callups for the friendlies against Poland and Macedonia next week. This happens with every set of Canada matches, and the fact that we hear the news from assorted club sites and European media sources before the final CSA roster is announced is nothing to be surprised or upset about. Liking not all the names have been confirmed quite yet.

Here's what we know:

Goalkeepers
  • Lars Hirschfeld (FC Energie Cottbus, 28 caps, 7 clean sheets): After a nightmarish year in Transylvania, Lars made the move to Germany where he is again riding pine, though his prospects seem improved [source for call-up news]
Defenders
  • Richard Hastings (Hamilton Academical FC, 56 caps, 1 goal): Hastings has been a loyal service in the past, but is long past his prime. I can't think of a good reason for this selection. [source]
  • Jacob Lensky (FC Utrecht, 0 caps): Lensky has been an interesting story over the years. In January, he was interviewed about his reasons for quitting Feyenoord. Soon after, he washed out in trials with Vancouver and Seattle, before popping up in the Eredivisie this summer, where he has been a regular with an upper-table side. [source].
Says Lensky of his callup: It's a pleasant surprise. I had heard rumours here and there, and I know that the coach had seen some Utrecht matches on TV
    . THIS!
  • Dejan Jakovic (DC United, 5 caps, 0 goals): Jakovic became a fixture of Canada's back line in this summer's Gold Cup and acquitted himself well. He was also a central part of DC United's defense, and his late season injury damaged the team's playoff hopes. He's one of several younger players who have the opportunity to put their stamp on the centre back position.
  • Mike Klukowski (Club Brugge, 24 caps, 0 goals): Klukowski is a personal favourite of mine, and probably the most consistent national team performer over the last few years. He has the starting left back spot locked down for the next while, which means guys like Lensky and de Jong will likely have to find work in the midfield if they want to play. [source]
  • Paul Stalteri (Borussia M'gladbach, 77 caps, 7 goals): Stalteri is a dedicated servant of the national team who is currently 5 caps short of tying the all-time record for Canada held by Randy Samuel. He is the runaway leader among active players, and I expect he'll keep getting called until he surpasses 82 caps. He also is one of few options at right back, and is a useful player when healthy, which hasn't been the case often this season. [source]
Midfielders
  • Atiba Hutchinson (FC Kobenhavn, 45 caps, 2 goals): Hutchinson is a consistent midfielder who, at age 26, seems to have reached a plateau career-wise. This isn't entirely a bad thing. FCK is a top team in Denmark that is in Europe every year, and Hutchinson is a key player for them who has been scoring goals lately. A key cog in any Canada midfield for the next few years. [source]
  • Marcel de Jong (Roda JC, 11 caps, 1 goal): Canada is in the unique position of having a glut of left-sided defensive players. With someone like Klukowski in the picture, de Jong is unlikely to play much at left back. But he's played in midfield with the national team, and more recently with his club. That's where I'd expect to see him play for Canada in these matches. [source]
Forwards
  • Rob Friend (Borussia M'gladbach, 22 caps 2 goals): Friend is returning from an injury, and scored a big game winning goal for his club on the weekend. His Bundesliga scoring record is much better than his national team strike rate, which he needs to improve. He's playing at the highest level of Canadian strikers, and should be a part of every squad in the near future. [source]

I'll keep updating as we learn more names, or we accidentally call up another waste of time like Lensky.

USL-1 final live blog

USL-1 final live blog
To live blog, or not to live blog. That is rarely the question, but today it was.

Final four, reduced to two

To be honest, my preferred option was to laze on the coach and take in back-to-back matches (Whitecap-Impacts followed by the acronymically potent TFC-RSL match up). But since SRC (French CBC) in Manitoba basically is one hour time shift of the Quebec channel, I've decided to watch the match online. Woudln't want to be living an hour in the past, you know.

So since I'll be at the computer, I'll share any thoughts, cogent or otherwise, that enter my mind.

First, some details:

USL-1 FINAL SECOND LEG
VANCOUVER WHITECAPS @ MONTREAL IMPACT

Stade Saputo, Montreal, QC

Saturday, 17 October 2009
2:30 pm et / 1:30 pm ct / 11:30 am pt

TV: Radio-Canada, Fox Sports World Canada
Online: Radio-Canada (french), atdhe.net

Montreal leads 3:2 on aggregate (no away goals rule)

The Impact match tracker has the lineups. The Impact are starting 2 Canadians and the Whitecaps 3 (in bold)

IMPACT: Jordan; Braz, Joqueviel, Pizzolitto, De Roux; Di Lorenzo, Donatelli, Gjertsen, Testo; Brown, Byers

WHITECAPS: Nolly; Knight, Bellisomo, Pejic, Hirano; Moose, Pozniak, Versailles, Toure; Haber, James

Interesting changes include Marlon James starting ahead of Charles Gbeke for Vancouver, as well as Chris Pozniak in for an injured Lyle Martin with Wes Knight playing his right back spot.

If you have a few minutes before kickoff, read this solid Vancouver Sun preview. You can also follow the match on twitter, thanks to Marc Weber of the Vancouver Province. He tells us that kickoff is to come at :42 after the hour (:12 after in Newfoundland).

Also liveblogging today's match is one of the guys from the 24th minute, in the far more easily interactive CoverItLive format. Not for me, though: I'm a whore for pageviews, and I want readers hitting refresh.

The Radio-Canada stream was patchy for last week's match, but is working nicely so far. My choice for the match, as long as the transmission holds.

The match in Montreal, live the first leg at cozy Swangard Stadium, is sold out. Which will look good for the cameras. Hopefully the Ultras and other hardcore support are in full voice.

I'll be rooting for the Whitecaps, by the way. I don't know if they can do it, though, without Martin Nash. Missing Lyle Martin isn't big, though.

Prediction: 2-2 final, 5-4 Montreal on aggregate.
What's yours? (Weighing in in the comments, or even just saying you're reading, gives me an indication that someone is actually reading this)

According to Impact coach Marc dos Santos, who has done a nice job of rehabilitating his coaching image after the Voyageurs Cup shitfest, mentions that the Impact players were shown a motivational video before the match. So, Whitecaps, look the fuck out! Because we all know how much professional athletes respond to motivational videos! Teitur Thordarson, the Whitecaps Icelandic manager, has a passable French. Good for him.

Anthems now, kickoff next. Adam Braz mouthing the words, in English.

1st minute: We're off. The crowd seems to be in fine voice. A Winnipeg connection - one of the assistant referees (read: linespeople) is Hector Vergara, who as done the same job at World Cups in the past.

De Roux gets away with a questionable body check that would have given Vancouver a dangerous free kick.

5th
: It looks like Vancouver is going to try to take advantage of every attacking throw-in by having Wes Knight launch it into the box.

First corner of the match now, to Montreal. In the rowdy end. Taken short, crossed, and cleared. More Montreal pressure that doesn't amount to anything.

12th: Roberto Brown is rocking the turtleneck today. Nice.

Marcus Haber just burned about 3 Impact players to eventually win a corner. Talent. Justin Moose's corner is cleared.

17th: Another corner coming for Vancouver. Moose again. Matt Jordan had to climb the ladder to take it away from Pejic.

Yellow to Bellisomo after mixing it up with Jordan on a high-ball into the box (free kick). Luca fouled him (slow whistle) then kicked at the loose ball.

Long throw-in from Knight is headed and rolls to Matt Jordan.

25th: Montreal is controlling the midfield, but Vancouver's technical players on the left side (Hirano, Toure, and Haber) have skinned Montreal's right (Braz, Donatelli) on several occasions.

28th: SHAMEFUL penalty call awarded to Montreal. Nolly had all ball.

Red card to Pejic for arguing. Referee, you are now the story. Congratulations.

Donatelli scores, and I'm done with this liveblog. This match turned into a farce with an undeserved red card and a dubious penalty. Fuck it.

Manchester City to win the League?

Manchester City to win the League?
Many leading figures in the game have questioned whether or not Manchester City can win the Premier League title this season. Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has already dismissed City's chances, however both Harry Redknapp and Martin O'Neill think Mark Hughes' men are contenders.

With the players they have signed over the summer (Gareth Barry, Roque Santa Cruz, Emmanuel Adebayor, Carlos Tevez etc;) you would think that they must be contenders, however it is how they gel together is the main thing. If they lose two or three games on the trot, suddenly pressure begins to mount and the players begin to lose interest, so it is vital Hughes keeps all of his players happy.

So, can City really challenge? I'm still undecided, however one things for sure, I wouldn't be gambling against it.
